Looking for ideas for your next meal and not sure what to get? Here’s a selection of my all-time favourite dishes that you can seek out for lunch or dinner that is commonly accessible in our food haven paradise in Singapore. Be it in a local coffeeshop, hawker centre or restaurants within the malls, there are plenty of places that sell their own iteration of it that is sure to hit the spot.
Kimchi Stew
As someone who adores spicy cuisine, despite occasionally struggling with the heat, kimchi stew was the very first Korean dish I ever tried, and it was the catalyst for my deep appreciation of Korean cuisine.
With its spicy kick and tangy undertones, this delectable stew never fails to tantalise the taste buds. Typically featuring a medley of kimchi, tender meat and silken tofu, it’s a harmonious blend of flavours and textures that’s simply irresistible.
Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup / Red-braised Beef Noodle Soup
Made with sliced beef, radish, herbs and chili oil, the beef in the soup is usually incredibly tender and pairs perfectly with chewy noodles that adds just the right amount of texture. And let’s not forget about the broth that is so rich and flavourful, it could warm you up from the inside out on the coldest of days.
Tomyum Soup
A must-try from Thai cuisine is Tom Yum soup, available usually with either seafood or chicken options. Known for its bold and vibrant flavours, especially when prepared authentically, it packs a spicy punch that will awaken your taste buds. Pair it with steamed rice to balance out the heat and savour every delicious spoonful.
Carbonara
Carbonara is a classic pasta dish that can sometimes divide opinions due to its richness from the cheese and eggs. However, I find it incredibly savoury, especially when seasoned with black pepper.
The combination of creamy sauce, salty pancetta or bacon, and the sharpness of Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese creates a flavour profile that’s both comforting and indulgent.
La Zi Ji
With a fiery appearance, diced chicken is stir-fried with chilis, Szechuan pepper, and other aromatic spices, creating a tantalising aroma and a distinctive flavour profile.
While it does have a bit of heat, it’s more about the numbing sensation from the Szechuan pepper, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the dish that I have come to enjoy and love.
