Paying homage to some of Singapore’s most beloved dishes, Tim Ho Wan has released an “Our Nation’s Favourites” series that incorporates local flavours into dim sum!
Fried Chilli Crabmeat Spring Roll
This Fried Chilli Crabmeat Spring Roll ($7.50) was probably one of our favourite dishes there. It has a sweet, savoury and mildly spicy chilli crab sauce, with chunks of real crab meat encased in a super crispy spring roll pastry. The sauce isn’t too wet and overwhelming, and compliments the briny sweetness of the crab meat perfectly. The crispy pastry also adds a delicious crunch to the silky sauce, making it a delectable bite!
Chilli Crabmeat Bun
If you’re craving something closer to the classic chilli crab experience, get these Chilli Crabmeat Buns ($8.80)! Again featuring a delicious sauce with chunks of real crabmeat, they’re available either steamed or lightly fried.
The steamed buns are best enjoyed piping hot, and the fluffy soft bread goes nicely with the saucy filling. As with the spring roll, the natural sweetness of the crabmeat shines through the sauce without being overpowered—we think Tim Ho Wan did a good job with this house-concocted chilli crab sauce!
The other version features a lightly-fried skin, and it provides a thin crispy exterior to add an extra layer of texture to the bun. The bun also isn’t oily despite having been deep-fried! The experience is very similar to eating chilli crab with fried mantou, so if you enjoy that, this may be the bun for you.
Baked Abalone Chicken Pie
The Baked Abalone Chicken Pie ($8.30) features a refined chicken pie filling of diced chicken, mushrooms, carrots and white onions, slow-cooked in a creamy white sauce. The filling stars baby abalone, which adds a hidden treasure in this pie!
Don’t let the filling distract you from the crust, which is great in its own right. The pastry casing is crumbly and extremely buttery, which adds another level of richness to the pie!
Snow Rabbit Pandan Coconut Pudding
This is the cutest dish of the lot! The Snow Rabbit Pandan Coconut Pudding ($6.30) is a jiggly, creamy coconut pudding that comes with a little meringue carrot! The pudding tastes similar to kueh jagung (corn flour kueh) minus the corn, and is a nostalgic and comforting flavour.
