Want a meal that is tasty yet healthy? Stacked creates gourmet artisanal sandwiches with a focus on what is arguably one of the most important yet undervalued components of a sandwich—the bread. Stacked uses their house specialty recipe to bake small batches of hand-kneaded bread daily, which they use together with fresh ingredients to create gourmet artisanal sandwiches.
Stacked offers seven sandwich flavours, which range from green and healthy to meaty and spicy. Any sandwich you order comes with a side of tapioca chips, which we enjoyed as a crunchy break between bites of our sandwiches. The chips are also lightly seasoned, which we feel is an appropriate accompaniment to the highly flavourful sandwiches.
We tried three sandwich flavours, our favourite being the Mighty Mala ($13). It features a whole crispy mala-marinated chicken thigh and a mala mayo spread, which are of course sandwiched between Stacked’s fresh hand-kneaded bread. You can choose between three levels of spiciness for this sandwich, making this a great option whether you love the tongue-numbing effects of mala or don’t enjoy too much spice.
The chicken thigh was moist, flavourful and delicious, but the mala mayo spread was the star of this sandwich with its perfect balance between “ma” and “la”. The sandwich had an authentic mala flavour thanks to its use of authentic Sichuan peppercorns, and overall was deeply flavourful.
Stacked’s hand-made bread was chewy and moist and reminded us of a ciabatta bun. It was a sturdy bun that stood up well to the sandwich, and we think it is a good match for the generous fillings.
The second sandwich we tried was the Sassy Seafood ($13), which had a mayonnaise-based filling full of minced crab meat and tiger prawns. It also had a layer of egg mayo, which made for a creamy sandwich. We enjoyed the flavour of the seafood filling, which was refreshing with its mix of fresh herbs.
The final sandwich we tried was the Slutty Egg ($11). It includes a decadent egg mayo filling and is topped with crispy bacon and melted Emmental cheese. This was a classic, and the crisp lettuce and bacon added a good balance of texture to the sandwich.
For those looking for a low-carb option, Stacked also sells salad bowls. We tried the Fet(a)vocado ($10), which features feta cheese and avocados on a bed of romaine lettuce, red onions, cherry tomatoes and croutons with a house dressing on the side. The salad was enjoyable—the salad leaves were crisp and fresh and the house dressing, avocado and feta cheese provided a tangy rich creaminess to the salad.
