Working from home has many advantages: you can work in your pyjamas if you like, you don’t have to commute, and you can be more focused and productive. If you approach the day with intention, you’ll make the most of it.
- Designate Your Own Workspace
Though working from your bed or sofa might be enticing, strive to set up something more formal. Perhaps you have a temporary workstation in the dining room, or you have a dedicated desk or office area at home.
Your workplace should ideally be in a room with an enclosed door to block out any distractions, as well as all of the materials and equipment you’ll need near at hand, such as a computer, printer, paper, headphones, and so on. You’ll want to avoid having to get up several times to get anything, as this will only reduce your productivity.
- Avoid Working Where You’ll Be Tempted Or Distracted
One of the secrets to working from home successfully is to act as if you’re at an office. If you were on the clock at work, would you take a break to wash laundry, watch Netflix, or do the dishes? Most likely not.
So don’t work in an environment that may tempt or distract you — don’t work with the TV on and stay away from the laundry and dishes! Get your duties done before you go to work, and then use the rest of the day to binge-watch Netflix.
- Plan Ahead
According to the Paper Giant survey, 44 percent of workers say it is now more necessary to know how to encourage oneself outside of the workplace. A to-do list is one of the most effective methods to do this, and the optimum time to make one is the night before.
Take the final 10 minutes of your day, when you’re still in work mode, to analyse what you truly need to get done tomorrow — a job that may take twice as long if you approach it cold first thing in the morning. The goal is to make your to-do list short and simple, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
- Take Breaks
When working at a computer or doing other sedentary activities, it’s crucial to get up and walk every hour or so to keep your blood flowing. Moving your eyes away from the computer on a frequent basis, even if it’s only for 10-20 seconds, is also beneficial.
Working from home has its own set of difficulties. However, sticking to a plan, communicating clearly with loved ones, and removing distractions can all help to lighten the load.
