For those who do not know, Yu Zhong Bu Tong 鱼众不同 is a clever play and pun on a Chinese idiom which also means out of the ordinary. Recently opening their doors in Wisma Atria’s Food Republic, they aim to serve local live fresh fish produce at best value rates in a fuss-free food court setting.
From its local seaside farm that is just an hour’s drive away to your table, you can be assured that their freshest daily live harvest is being served whenever you dine in. Ultimately, Yu Zhong Bu Tong hopes to introduce more local produce that is 100% natural and safe for consumption to the tables of all Singaporeans.
Although the main stars on their menu is the fish, you should definitely give their appetizers a try too! The Fresh Green Mussels with Spicy Sauce ($7.80) is simply poached and the sweet and juicy plump meat paired well with the chef’s special spicy sauce. Tasting pretty similar to an oyster, you can definitely taste the flavours of the sea in this.
For something a little more fully cooked, the Fried Fresh Fish Bites with Mustard Dips ($7.80) was not overly oily despite it being deep fried and the freshness of the fish stands out with the addition of black and white sesame seeds for added fragrance.
At Yu Zhong Bu Tong, there are four signature fish soup flavours namely – Tomato, Collagen, Spicy Poached and Sauerkraut. A healthier and tastier method of cooking, their soups retain the best flavours and nutrition of the fish so you can expect delicate sweetness that matches the tenderness of its flesh.
The Collagen Fish Soup ($9.80) is boiled from fresh fish bones, fresh fish scales and fresh fish maw to attain its rich collagen based and sweetened with servings of fresh fish slices. Personally, this is my favourite soup base as it is very nourishing coupled with added beauty and firming benefits. Each portion comes with tofu, enoki mushroom, romaine lettuce and a bowl of rice.
The Tomato Fish Soup ($9.80) on the other hand has a sweet flavour that fades into a tasty acidity. The soup is made with fresh tomatoes and sweetened with a large amount of live fresh fish slices. With a sweeter aftertaste, this is a good and mild option for children.
For those who enjoy a tart twist, the pickled mustard provides a robust and punchy flavour in the Sauerkraut Fish Soup ($9.80). With an appetizingly sour acidity, pumpkin paste, ginger, yellow pepper, and anise star enhances its flavour along with a handful of shallot, dried peppercorn, and bay leaf for more complex flavours.
Spice lovers will appreciate the hot mala flavours of the Spicy Poached Fish Soup ($9.80). The addition of dried chilli padi, spicy chilli sauce, spicy bean sauce, and a special spice infused chilli oil makes a fiery pot of soup that will leave you drenched in sweat but also craving for another mouthful.
Each portion of the Sauerkraut Fish Soup, Spicy Poached Fish Soup and Tomato Fish Soup comes with 2 sides of choice and a bowl of rice. For the sides, choose from enoki mushroom, big beansprouts, black fungus, tofu skin, lettuce, tomatoes, tapioca noodles and more.
After many spoonfuls of delicious soup, we hope you leave some room for their chef’s signature Sour Plum Drink ($2.80). Made with dried sourplums and hawthorn berries, this is a fruity and refreshing drink with a sweet and sour flavour. The drink complements the sweetness of the fish soup while also balancing out the spicier food and is a great add on to wash it all down.
Enjoy the freshest live fish that comes served in large portions at great value-for-money prices at Yu Zhong Bu Tong. This is definitely a MUST SHARE and we highly recommend bringing friends and family to enjoy these soups together or visit their Facebook or Instagram for more information!
