With it being the Lunar New Year, one definitely cannot miss out on the Fortune Abalone Yu Sheng (ala-carte from $43.80) so diners can look forward to the fun and energetic ritual of ‘tossing up good fortune’.
The inclusion of shredded codfish, satay fish and rostered squid makes this dish stand out from the rest as compared to other yusheng variations out there. Their house-made peppery yuzu sauce has a different kick to it and altogether the yusheng was very fruity sweet and complemented the savoury taste of the 18-head abalone well. It even comes with an auspicious tiger ornament for you to bring home afterwards, very cute indeed.
Looks can be deceiving as the Braised Crab Meat Fish Maw Thick Soup was damn shiok! Slow cooked for hours to invoke the flavors of seafood and ingredients, each scoop is packed with ingredients and will undoubtedly warm your tummy. This is a must-share delicacy in replacement of the not as animal friendly ‘Shark’s Fin’ one has for Chinese New Year with your relatives and friends.
Start the year with a whole lot of “abundance” with the Hong Kong Style Steamed Marble Goby that is popular especially in Cantonese restaurants. Known as a premium fish, the steamed goby is exceedingly delicate in texture and has a very succulent white meat. Paired with the light soy sauce base, the dish goes great with rice or beehoon.
With it being what they are known for, each set is headlined by their signature White Beehoon with an abundance of festive deluxe additions such as Pacific Clams and Abalone. Filled to the brim with premium seafood, the broth is enhanced with the clean crips sweetness of clams. The tender clams along with the inclusion of Japanese scallops, sea cucumber and fish maw were delicious and should be a mainstay on their menu even after the festive celebrations end.
Instead of the traditional yam ring, White Restaurant‘s Crispy Conpoy and Curry Prawn Yam Ring has a hint of spiciness with every bite that has soaked in the flavors and spices from the curry. The golden yam basket was full of ingredients such as dried scallops and succulent curry prawns which were a great pairing in my opinion. As compared to the usual stir-fried vegetables and meat that is found in the traditional Yam Ring, more seafood and meat is definitely a better choice for the children in your family that usually does not touch this dish.
The Fatt Choy Shajing Oyster & Tian Bai Mushroom with Broccoli is a wonderfully auspicious dish of oyster stewed in superior stock to full-bodied sweetness. The added intensity with mushroom and broccoli, topped with White Restaurant’s distinctive superior soya sauce will make even the adults who hate broccoli try a mouthful and still be pleasantly surprised. The intense, salty-sweet flavor is stunning with each bite thanks to their impressive soya sauce.
Wrap things up on an auspicious notes with a quintessential Chinese dessert like the Red Bean Snow Pancake and Yam Paste where a crispy, golden crepe envelops a sheet of warm velvety red bean. Thereafter, it is dusted with icing sugar, served with fresh strawberries and yam paste for added sweetness.
