It’s time to look at eight of the rarest dog breeds around the world! Here are some lovely and unusual dog breeds that will make you bark with delight. You should be aware though that you may not be able to get one even if you want to but you can always learn more about them below:
1) Otterhound
The otterhound is a big hunting dog. With its rough, thick coat and webbed feet, the otterhound stands out from other hounds and is considered a Vulnerable Native Breed with around 600 animals worldwide.
Thanks to their enormous chests, large lungs, and robust shoulders, these dogs can swim all day without tiring. They also have huge noses that can detect otters underwater from great distances. In terms of size, Otterhounds may reach a height of 0.69 meters and a weight of 52 kilograms.
2) Chinook
Bred for sled dog racing in the beginning, Chinooks were named after the first dog that led the dog sledding team in its honour. Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the rarest dog breed, there were only 28 Chinooks remaining in 1981 however they were successful saved through a careful breeding program. This is an athletic breed that is equally at home on the trail or cuddling on the couch with his human family. They can reach a height of 0.69 meters and a weight of 41 kilograms.
3) Azawakh
The Azawakh, with its regal and beautiful appearance, is extremely slim, as if the dog hasn’t eaten in a long time. Bred to be a sighthound, the Azawakh is a Sahara Desert breed that hunts by sight rather than scent. They are valued by their owners for their beauty and speed and can reach a height of 0.74 meters and a weight of 25 kilograms.
4) Norwegian Lundehund
The Norwegian Lundehund is a small spitz breed where their most distinguishable trait are their toes. With six completely functional toes, four that point outwards and 2 inwards, these help the dogs to maintain traction and grip when navigating the wilderness. In terms of size, the Norwegian Lundehund can reach a height of 0.40 meters and a weight of 7 kilograms.
5) Finnish Spitz
The Finnish Spitz exhibits fox-like characteristics, and their coats are of a reddish hue. Known as the “barking bird dog”, they point hunters to small game and birds with a distinct ringing bark or yodel. Along with a wide range of vocalizations, they are attentive and energetic creatures that are never shy towards strangers. The Finnish Spitz may reach a height of 0.50 meters and a weight of 13 kilograms.
6) Borzoi
In the beginning, Borzoi hound dogs were developed in Russia to hunt rabbit, foxes and wolves in a team of three. Graceful, robust, and quick, their silky coat is normally white with darker patterns and can be flat or slightly curled. Their princely stature made them a popular companion for royalty across continental Europe. In terms of size, Borzois can reach a height of 0.71 meters and a weight of 48 kilograms.
7) Thai Ridgeback
Despite being tough and muscular, the Thai Ridgeback manages to maintain a sleek appearance and are well-known for their excellent jumping ability. They are also one of only three breeds that has a ridge of hair that runs along its back in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. Thai Ridgebacks may reach a height of 0.61 meters and a weight of 34 kilograms.
8) Saluki
The Saluki stands out from the other dogs at the dog park thanks to its long-haired ears and even longer snout. A tall and gentle species, its thin and lanky stature lends it speed and agility—skills that were required thousands of years ago when it was the Egyptians’ favourite hunting hound. In terms of size, Salukis may reach a height of 0.71 meters and a weight of 27 kilograms.
