Fried chicken exists in a range of forms, seasonings, and sauces, spanning from the basic bucket fare to spicy Nashville chicken. Fortunately for us, Singapore’s dense culinary scene has made way for a wide variety of fried chicken on our shores. Here are our best selections for when you’re in the mood for something greasy.
Chix Hot Chicken
Do you think KFC is all America has to offer? You’ve got it backwards. Nashville-style country chicken is a popular style of chicken enjoyed all over America. This style of chicken is generally marinated in buttermilk, fried, and seasoned with cayenne pepper (often in the form of some chili oil) and other spices such as garlic and paprika. It’s occasionally served on the bone with white bread and pickles to cool things down a touch. Fascinated? Try The Dip ($9.90) at Chix Hot Chicken where they take pride in being Singapore’s first Nashville chicken joint.

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar
Yardbird Southern Table & Bar is well known for its trademark Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon ‘N’ Waffles ($40), which has become a household brand in the United States. The chicken is brined for 27 hours before being floured and pressure-fried till golden brown on the exterior and glistening with fat and juices on the inside. You’ll also want to save room for the fried green tomato biscuits ($14), crab cake ($23), and skillet cornbread ($10), which are all standouts’ people tend to come here for as well.

Ah Tan Wings

Har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) isn’t simply a side dish at Ah Tan Wings, it’s the main attraction. The iconic chicken wings ($5.20) are coated in their wonderfully crunchy batter and served with aromatic rice and a dollop of spicy homemade chilli to help cut through the fat. However, if you’re in a hurry, the sizable chicken cutlet ($5.80) is just as good, if not better allowing you to chew away without worrying about bones.

If it’s your first time, you can go for the 2-piece meal ($7.30) that comes with a wing and thigh along with 2 sides. You can’t really go wrong with simple fried chicken if you’re looking for an uncomplicated family dinner that everyone will enjoy.

Warong Nasi Pariaman
First and foremost, Indonesian chicken isn’t particularly attractive when we live in a time where there is a KFC around every corner, but we don’t judge books by their covers here. This fried chicken ($3.50), unlike others, is made without a batter. Instead, traditional Asian spices including turmeric, garlic, lemongrass, galangal, bay leaves, and coconut water are used to give it a unique and rich flavour. It’s marinated overnight, deep-fried till golden brown, and served with a sambal dipping sauce that is sure to leave you gasping for air. Don’t take our word for it as you have to try it to believe it.

This list is for you if you believe fried chicken is superior to all other types of junk food. Just remember to hit the gym after indulging in a good meal.
