The BTS Meal drops in-stores today (21/06) at all McDonald’s Outlets. (Click here for more background info on The BTS Meal). Fans across the island have been trying to get their hands on the exclusive collaboration. But as a regular diner at McDonald’s, is it worth the money? Hear it from me (not a super fan of BTS, but always curious about new collaborations), to see if it is worth it.
Availability
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, you cannot simply walk-in to any store in Singapore to purchase the collaboration meal. As mentioned by the poster, the meal is only available on delivery platforms that have McDonald’s as a partner (eg Grabfood and Foodpanda). I initially tried to order the meal through the McDelivery App, but a virtual waiting room was presented to me. I was in the virtual room for about 30mins, so I decided to use a 3rd party delivery app and that was so much quicker. The meal took 30mins to be delivered to my doorstep :O. (McDonald’s, you got some explaining to do about your app… XD)
Packaging
From the global news, what I had expected was BTS packaging, with a purple nugget box, purple drink, and a BTS paper bag. But it turns out, the BTS paper bag is not available in Singapore…
The packaging on the remaining items and sauces were as expected and nothing was out of the ordinary. From observation, the only main difference between this and a usual 9pcs chicken nugget set meal, was the sauce.
Food
The fries and drinks are what you usually get when your order McDonalds’ and since the sauce was the main difference here, it deserves a whole dedicated section. XD
- Sweet Chilli Sauce
The Sweet Chilli Sauce here does not really taste that unique. The sweet is not as sweet, the spicy not as spicy. To be honest, it was underwhelming. (Sorry fans…) The taste was comparable to a Maggi chilli sauce commonly found in Singapore households, and given the description, it can’t beat Mae Pranom Thai Sweet Chili Sauce($2.50), which leans on the slightly more sweeter side. Consistency was thicker than usual sauces you would find from McDonald’s so it would stick more on the nugget, so on the plus side, you will get more sauce per bite! XD
- Cajun Sauce
This sauce was much more unique than the Sweet Chilli Sauce. The colour looked a bit like a cheese dip, but it smelled tangy. The taste of this sauce was like a fragrant mustard dip with various levels of tanginess and a hint of Cajun Spice. It would be better if it was called Mustard Sauce instead as it is more mustard than cajun in my opinion. But the combination goes extremely well with the nugget, and adds a more refreshing level of flavour to the nugget that you would not expect at all. So personally, this sauce is a MUST TRY from the meal.
Cost
The BTS Meal currently costs about $9.85 (current promotion at $8.90) which includes a 9pc chicken nugget box, Large fries and a Large Coke.
In comparison, a regular Chicken McNugget Meal, with a Large Fries and Large Coke, would set you back about $8.95. So with the promotion price, it is actually 5cents cheaper. :O But this does not take into account the delivery fees charged by the various platforms and the minimum order limitations.
Verdict
The BTS Meal is really just an elevated 9pc chicken McNugget meal from McDonald’s. But if you are looking for a new twist in your usual nugget sauce, I would highly recommend trying The BTS meal at least once, for the Cajun Sauce is AMAZING! (personal preference). So in my opinion, its worth trying at least once!
