If you want to commit your life to the magnificent cause of only watching great movies and doing nothing else, you’ve come to the right place. It might be tough to decide what to watch at times, so I’ve simplified things for you. Please keep in mind that this is my own opinion and that I am not a movie critic.
Set in Casablanca during the early years of World War II, Rick Blaine’s (Humphrey Bogart) nightclub is a sanctuary for refugees despite warnings from local authorities. But things take a turn for the worst when Rick’s ex-lover and her boyfriend arrive, bringing with them a new obstacle. Casablanca, one of the most renowned classic Hollywood films of all time, is a love story you’ll never forget.
2001: A Space Odyssey is psychedelic and a little difficult to follow, but it is an absolute must-see. In only a few hours, Stanley Kubrick transports us from the birth of the human species to the dawn of a whole new species, and his perspective on space and space travel sets the bar for a thousand sci-fi films to follow.
More significantly, it’s engrossing and horrifying all at the same time. Despite the fact that it was produced over 50 years ago (despite its titular name, the film was produced in 1968), it has aged quite well and you have to watch it to find out why.
In my opinion, Seven Samurai is the simplest 207 minutes of film you’ll ever watch. Akira Kurosawa creates a wonderfully engrossing, hilarious, and exhilarating work, on the most basic of frameworks—a impoverished farming village pooling its resources to pay samurais to guard them from the savage bandits who steal their produce.
Of course, the action moments are thrilling—(without giving away too much about the show) the final clash in the rain is unforgettable—but this is mostly a study of human strengths and flaws. Toshiro Mifune is fantastic as the half-crazed self-styled warrior, but Takashi Shimura’s Yoda-like commander provides the picture with its emotional heart.
Watching the film, There Will Be Blood is like seeing a natural calamity that you can’t escape. That is not to say that the film is horrible, or that it is good. It is a power that defies classification.
It contains sequences of dread and sadness, scenes of merciless tomfoolery, scenes epic in scope, moments echoing with whispers, and an ending that, in some strange way, this material requires, that could not close on an acceptable note. This is a must watch that will at the end change the way you define life.
Martin Scorsese’s gangster masterpiece, Good Fellas, is a magnificently crafted epitaph to boyhood idols who turn out to have clay feet and blood-soaked hands. Even though it is a 1990 American biographical crime film, three decades have passed and yet this movie is a blast of pure cinematic adrenaline.
It’s famous for many things – the 300 f-bombs, the iconic Copacabana one shot, the countless needle-drop moments, Billy Batts’ death, Joe Pesci’s shirt collars, and so on – but if there’s one reason why it’s a favorite with everyone from hardcore cineastes to professional footballers (that, and Scarface), it’s the arc of Ray Liotta’s antihero Henry Hill. In 150 frenetic minutes, he goes from starry-eyed youngster to wannabe gangster to hard-bitten wise guy to coked-up paranoiac so watch it today to find out more!
You would have probably heard or have seen Parasite being mentioned on the internet which was met with critical acclaim when it was released and even won several Academy Awards. The film is both fascinating and moving and if you have not watched it, you definitely should.
The ensemble cast, particularly Song Kang-ho, Park So-dam, and Choi Woo-shik, elevates the proceedings with outstanding performances. As critics claim, ‘Parasite’ is a wonderfully made picture with an intelligent and searing investigation of human behaviour.
The sci-fi adventure comedy Back to the Future is the opening installment of what is essentially one of the finest trilogies in the universe. Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, travels back in time to 1955.
There, he meets his future parents and unintentionally becomes his mother’s crush… don’t pretend you weren’t there. They set off on a quest to make his parents fall in love and return Marty to good ol’ ’85, accompanied by everyone’s favorite psychologically dubious scientist, ‘Doc.’
Lists are meant to be debated about, and a list of the greatest movies of all time is guaranteed to ignite a fight. That is how vital cinema is to the most dedicated movie goers. As a result, it is practically hard to create a single, complete canon that appeals to all preferences. So, what types of films do you consider classics?
