The association of cartoons/anime with youth sometimes carries an unjust stigma: cartoons/anime are for kids, for youngsters who can suspend disbelief enough to relate to talking to animals or who still believe in magic. I have you covered whether you’re looking for a Japanese import, a dark adult comedy, or something to watch with your kids.
A good watch for everyone. Even by the absurd superhero genre’s standards, One-Punch Man‘s baseball antics are in a league of their own. When a 25-year-old college graduate saves a rosy-cheeked, butt-chinned youngster from a lobster man-homicidal monster’s claws, he abandons his hunt for a paying career and commits himself to a three-year training program with the goal of becoming a hero. In case you are curious, yes his hair naturally falls out. The series can be found on Netflix.
Retsuko is a 25-year-old red panda who works as an office assistant at a trade company’s accounting department in Tokyo. All she wants to do is perform her job and get through the day, but when workplace frustrations reach a breaking point, she goes into “rage mode” and releases her anger through death metal karaoke sessions.
The characters of Aggretsuko (whose Japanese title roughly translates as “Aggressive Retsuko”) were first presented to the public in a series of short skits shown on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System), and their fan base has slowly grown around the world. The Netflix Original series will consist of 10 15-minute episodes that will follow Retsuko as she navigates business politics, befriends coworkers, and seeks to strike a good work/life balance. The series can be found on Netflix.
Probably one of my favourite anime, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a manga that is divided into numerous sections, each of which follows a member of the fictitious Joestar family as they face a different supernatural menace. The first two of these sections, Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, are adapted in Season One. These two chapters are part of the same narrative, yet they are completely distinct in terms of protagonists and tone. If you’re planning to watch, please do not skip the parts. The series can be found on Netflix.
Some folks are perplexed when I tell them that BoJack Horseman is one of the finest series of the last decade: Isn’t that just the melancholy Netflix show about a horse with man hands? To which I respond, “Yes?” But no, though there are tears, death, drugs, drink, and abuse in BoJack Horseman, it isn’t all of those things. It’s also hilarious – far more so than virtually any other program on this list, in my opinion, especially if you enjoy a good pun or parody. The series can be found on Netflix.
If the title didn’t give it away, F Is For Family‘s humour is low-brow — it never misses a chance to throw in a knob or plop into the mix. While this is something you can receive from pretty much every animated comedy, F Is For Family goes above and above by tying it all together into one seamless narrative.
The fact that it manages this throughout full season arcs is particularly noteworthy, as this is something that, with a few notable exceptions, is rarely done in this kind of program. South Park tried its hand at season-length plotlines, with mixed success — albeit they do face the persistent problem of corset-tight schedules rather than animation’s customary months-long turnaround time. The series can be found on Netflix.
These are just some animated series that can be found on Netflix that is bound to intrigue and please newbies and animation lovers alike so check them out today!
