Skating nowadays is not only practical but also offers a lot of fun and is less expensive compared to buying a new bike. Furthermore, because of Singapore’s year-round summer and well-paved roads, you’ll be able cruise around the city with relative ease.
So, today I’ll be sharing my personal experience in skateboarding around Singapore and share a brief lesson on the different types of skateboards and places to skate in Singapore.
What is a skateboard?
Skateboards are made out of a short piece of wood mounted on roller-skate wheels that are usually utilized on smooth surfaces and require the rider to maintain balance while on board.
How many kinds of skateboards are there?
There are many different types of boards suited for many different uses, nonetheless I’ll only be writing about 4 different kinds of boards known as Street skateboards, cruiser skateboards, longboards, and surf skateboards.
- Street Skateboards

Starting from street skateboards, it is by far the most popular kind of skateboard and what most people would picture what a skateboard is like.
These types of skateboards are versatile, lightweight and cheap. Made for doing tricks as well as cruising. Due to their “popsicle stick” shaped design which allows the user to switch in between while doing tricks. I highly recommend street skateboard for beginners who are interested to start their journey in skateboarding.
- Cruiser Boards
By far my favourite kind of board so far. There are 2 types of cruiser boards, one known as a mini cruiser and a normal cruiser. A cruiser skateboard is a form of skateboard built for cruising down streets, metropolitan areas, or any flat surface. A kicktail, which is the section of the board that bends up at the back end, is found on many cruiser boards. However, this isn’t always the case, and cruisers aren’t as specialized for stunts as skateboards are. They’re also not built for speed or driving downhill.
- Longboards
When it comes to street riding, its design is flawless. Even on a rougher surface, its design, flexible truck, and soft wheels make it pleasant and easy to control. Though it might not be cheap, long boards can be great fun as well. If you want the best of both worlds between a street skateboard and cruiser board, a longboard is terrific for cruising while also being capable of tricks and you can even “dance” with it!
- Surfskate
What is surfskate? In its most basic form, a surfskate is a cruiser board that simulates surfing. The front of most surfskates features an adaptor that links to the truck and allows it to pivot side to side. If you’re looking for a fun and liberating way to skate, you’ll definitely enjoy being on a surfskate board.
