In today’s society, our eyes are always glued to our phone screens. Technology is always evolving, and it has definitely helped us in so many ways – communication, entertainment, lifestyle and more.

We watch movies using our devices o movie streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, sometimes even when we are out and about. This can be rather dangerous, and you are unaware of what is ahead and can result in incidents.

However, there are so many other ways to keep ourselves entertained. We can listen to music and podcasts too! Radios are not the only way you can listen to podcasts. Thanks to the advancement of technology, we can listen to podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Let’s look at some local podcasts that you can listen to via these platforms!

Randomly Relatable SG

Founded by Shuraim Basir and Uwais Hatta, Randomly Relatable SG discusses topics that may be considered controversial such as the General Election. However, they also talk about other light-hearted topics such as Valentines’ Day.

They took their podcast a step further as they invite guest over to discuss some topics. They have invited an ex-convict, a former gangster and also a transgendered youth. Despite the types of topics they discuss in their podcast, the duo only wanted genuine conversations about taboo topics that they themselves are just as curious.

The team currently has 3 members with the addition of a Mass Communication graduate, Sabrina Shiraz. She was roped in to provide a female point-of-view about the topics and has since brought a new dimension to the podcast.

Available on: Spotify and Google Podcasts.

Ya Lah But

Hosted by Haresh and Terence from the YouTube Channel Ministry of Funny, the podcast is known to discuss some of the most uncensored topics. That is pretty unusual for a country like Singapore. Nonetheless, this duo is always discussing controversial topics. Their podcast is really ‘no-filter’.

During these times of crisis, the duo has then focused on the pandemic and how it has made an impact on business and social practices. Due to mature content, this podcast is definitely targeted to adults rather than teens.

Available on: Podbean, Spotify and Apple Podcast.

Malam Seram

Malam Seram (which translates to fright night) is a late-night podcast sharing scary encounters and mysteries experienced by listeners. Hosted by DJ KC, formerly from the radio station, Ria 89.7, Malam Seram is arguably one of the most enjoyed podcasts in the Malay community in Singapore.

The podcast has also reached international standards. Listeners from all over the world are often tuning to listen to these scary stories. It is actually one of my favourite podcasts, coming from someone who hates everything scary.

The podcast starts exactly at midnight and will last for about an hour or two. I obviously do not listen to it at that time but will tune in to listen to it on YouTube. It is such a scary yet interesting podcast to listen to especially if you are into horror themed things.

Available on: Spotify and Apple Podcast.

*Language: Malay

Singapore Noodles

Okay, lets move away from scary things and tantalise our tastebuds with Singapore Noodles. Hosted by local chef, Pamelia Chia, Singapore Noodles takes you on a journey finding some regional dishes such as Javanese Urap and South Indian Rasam.

Not only that but you can learn about other food related topics such as food culture appropriation, dying trades and more. Special guests are also invited such as Makansutra founder KF Seetoh and Chef Damien D’Silva as they discuss these food related topics.

Available on Singapore Noodles, Spotify, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts.

*Language: English

This is a sign for you to take a break from your phone screen and listen to some insightful and interesting topics through these podcasts. Share this with your friends and family and this might just be your next favourite form of entertainment.
